HEANOR OBSERVER 19TH SEPTEMBER 1918 FORMER TRAMDRIVER KILLED LOCAL SOLDIER DEATH The regrettable intimation that her brother, Pte F.R. Smith of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers has been killed in action in France on August 27th has reached Mrs Heath of Denby Lane Loscoe, with whom he previously resided. The deceased, who was only 23 years of age. Was well known, In Heanor and district, and will be remembered as one of the first motormen to be employed on the Notts and Derbyshire tramways. The news of his early death will be received with great sorrow by his many friends. No official announcement has yet been received, but the following letter from his Officer leaves little room for doubt as to his death. It is will great sorrow I write to offer you the deepest sympathy of the company and myself in your great loss; your brother was killed in the attack made by the battalion on August 27th.I am afraid I cannot get any details as no men who saw him hit are at present in the company.He did not suffer much, and death was speedy after he was hit. Pte Smith had been n the Army over two years, and was in the Sherwoods previous to being sent to France last June, When he was transferred to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.
