RIPLEY AND HEANOR NEWS 19th JULY 1918 CODNOR PTE KILLED PTE W. COWLISHAW WEST YORKS REGIMENT Yet one more Codnor young man has made the great sacrifice on the western front. This is Pte W. Cowlishaw, aged 19 of the West York's Regiment, the only son of Mr and Mrs Cowlishaw, reported killed in action on the 28 June 1918. The sad news reached his parents on 5th July by letter of sympathy from his commanding Officer, known to his chums, and chaplain as a soldier and true British. The chaplain writes: His body was brought back to Hazebrouck for burial in the Military cemetery, here his grave will be looked after and I will see that a cross is erected. We know what a splendid fellow he was and I am sure a fine son. He died for others, doing his highest duty. His officer also writes: He was spared any suffering, his death being instantaneous. He was universally liked by the whole platoon, and as his platoon commander I should like to offer you my sincere sympathy. I trust you will take comfort from the fact that he died a noble death in the cause of freedom. Enlisting in April 1917 Pte Cowlishaw trained at Rugeley and Clipstone, this year. He passed through some severe engagements in the short time he was there previous to his death on June 28th. In civil life the deceased was in the employ of Mr A. Peake, Market gardener, and was well liked by the villagers who extend their sympathy to his parents.
