EASTWOOD & KIMBERLEY ADVERTISER 9th OCTOBER 1914 Among the missing men from the crew of H.M.S. Aboukir, which sank after being torpedoed in the North Sea, is Stoker Herbert Marson, 22 a native of Codnor. The young man was well known and respected in the village, where after being a scholar of Mill Lane schools, he joined the Navy at the age of 17. Prior to being attached to the crew of the ill-fated Aboukir he served on H.M.S. Vernon. His Codnor relatives were doubtful as to his fate, but such doubt was dismissed when the name appeared in the list issued by the Admiralty on Monday last stating that "in the absence of any evidence to the contrary it is feared that they must be regarded as having lost their lives.
