"The bitterest blow it is hard to say" "Thy will be done" HEANOR OBSERVER 31ST JULY 1919 SOLDEIR REPORTED DEAD HEANOR FAMILY LOSS We regret to hear of a further addition to our local roll of honour dead, news having reached Mr and Mrs Wm Marshall, of Midland Rd Heanor, that their son Pte George William Marshall of the 15th Sherwoods, who has been reported missing since March 24th 1918 must now be presumed dead, as no trace of him has been found. The deceased soldier, who was 21 years of age and was well known locally, joined the Army on February 19th 1916, and went to France on June 16th of the same year. He was wounded at the Somme on July 7th 1916, and was brought to England to recover. He returned to France on New Years Day 1917, and remained there until February 7th 1918. When he came home on leave returning on February 19th. It was in the fighting on the Somme he was last known to be engaged. Pte Marshall, who worked at Messrs I & R Morley's factory prior to enlisting, was formerly a member of the Heanor Church Lads Brigade, and was a member of the Church Sunday School.
